The High Hall Syndicate is a group of fly fishers fishing the River Allen near Wimborne, Dorset.
The Trout
The beat contains a good number of brown trout in the 12" to 16" category and some even bigger. We are practicing a no stocking policy, low maintenance and catch & release. We are cutting some access to the river, but access is in some places is tough during the middle of the summer.
The Mayfly & Other Hatches
The beat is the best place on the River Allen to fly fish the mayfly hatch (E. Danica) with a good hatch normally starting the first or second week of May. It can be a bit up or down from one year to another, but at its best it is fantastic fly fishing for wild trout on the dry fly. Before the mayfly starts we have caddis starting in April and after the mayfly into the summer we have spinner falls and various smaller hatches of mayflies (Baetis etc.), caddis and midges.
The Grayling
The River Allen in our section has a good number of large grayling, many in the 16" to 18" category. So when the trout does not co-operate there is always the grayling to try, often sight-fishing with a nymph. Big grayling is particulary popular to fly fish during the later stages of the season.
Membership
Presently the syndicate is full, but please contact us if you are interested in being added to the waiting list. We have a steady membership but sometimes new places become available. The syndicate has 10 members, but we want to expand that by 2-3 for next season therefore we expect availability for the 2024 season. The price for unlimited fishing is £550 a year.
Work parties
In order to keep costs down we are arranging work parties to improve fish habitat and access. We are particulary looking for young members that can make a contribution at work parties. Our chairman always brings superb cake and tea!
